Life in the East Midlands

The East Midlands is made up of six counties: Lincolnshire, Leicestershire & Rutland, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, the Peak District and Derbyshire.

These counties benefit from strong rail and road links and are served by one international airport: East Midlands Airport. They are also within easy reach of Stansted, Birmingham, Manchester, Doncaster Robin Hood, Luton and Humberside airports

Lincolnshire

Over the last 5-10 years, there have been sufficient improvements to the road networks in and around the county, giving excellent links to Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and South Yorkshire. The capital of the Shire itself, Lincoln, has seen massive growth in the last 6 years since the opening of Lincoln University. As a result of the improved travel networks, including rail and air, many companies are re-locating to the area and so there are far more employment opportunities than ever before. The Main Line from Edinborough to London King’s Cross stops at Grantham giving direct access to London for those who need to commute. Lincolnshire offers many varied environments from the coastal areas, the fen lands, to the undulating hills of the Wolds. There are endless sporting activities catered for and peaceful scenery just to be enjoyed by the less energetic. Throughout the county, there are many wonderful historic buildings and quaint market towns. A rural area that incorporates modern needs alongside England’s finest traditional way of living without compromising its surroundings.

Leicestershire

Melton Mowbray, a market town in the county of Leicestershire, is located in the heart of the East Midlands and is conveniently situated within a 20 mile radius of Leicester, Nottingham, Oakham and Grantham, with Peterborough, Stamford and Market Harborough only a few miles further on.

This popular and bustling market town is especially renown for its pork pies, Stilton cheese and country pursuits. The borough is a unique combination of old and new and for those people interested in the history of the area they live in, they cannot fail to be completely enthralled by Melton’s rich heritage. This is still evident today in buildings such as St Mary’s Church, with its 100 foot tower and Anne of Cleves’ House, which was a gift from King Henry VIII to his divorced wife in the mid sixteenth century.

The countryside surrounding Melton Mowbray (Medeltone – meaning ‘Middleton surrounded by small hamlets’) comprises many pretty villages and hamlets, with the famous Belvoir Castle just a few miles away.

Leicestershire offers enormous diversity, from the vibrancy of city life with its great shops, museums, restaurants and bars, to the peacefulness of the countryside.
